Attica (village), New York

The Attica is a village in Wyoming County, New York in the USA. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 2,597. It is named after a region in Greece.

The Village of Attica is on the northern border of Wyoming County. The village lies mostly within the Town of Attica, but the northern part of the village is within the adjacent Town of Alexander in Genesee County.

Attica State Correctional Facility and Wyoming County State Correctional Facility are located south of the village in the Town of Attica.

Geography

Attica is west of Tonawanda Creek on Routes 354 and 238 at 42°51'54" North, 78°16'37" West (42.865138, -78.276885)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 4.4 km² (1.7 mi²). None of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 2,597 people, 1,072 households, and 709 families residing in the village. The population density is 596.8/km² (1,542.8/mi²). There are 1,158 housing units at an average density of 266.1/km² (687.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 98.81% White, 0.15% African American, 0.35% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.12% from other races, and 0.42% from two or more races. 0.62% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,072 households out of which 33.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.3% are married couples living together, 13.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.8% are non-families. 29.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the village the population is spread out with 25.8% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 29.8% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 95.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.8 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $40,234, and the median income for a family is $47,049. Males have a median income of $35,729 versus $22,007 for females. The per capita income for the village is $18,732. 9.9% of the population and 6.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.4% of those under the age of 18 and 6.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
