Attica (town), New York

Attica is a town located in Wyoming County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 6,028. The town is named after a region in Greece.

The Town of Attica is on the north border of the county and contains part of a village also named Attica.

History

The Town of Attica was established in 1811.

Attica is the location of New York's Attica Correctional Facility, which was the location of the infamous Attica Prison riots that occurred on September 13, 1971. That prison and the New York Wyoming Correctional Facility are located south of the Village of Attica.

Geography

The north town line is the border of Genesee County, New York.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 93.3 km² (36.0 mi²). 92.5 km² (35.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.8 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.83% water. Tonawanda Creek passes through the northwest part of the town.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,028 people, 1,497 households, and 1,053 families residing in the town. The population density is 65.2/km² (168.8/mi²). There are 1,603 housing units at an average density of 17.3/km² (44.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 72.79% White, 21.07% African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 5.18% from other races, and 0.30% from two or more races. 9.16% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,497 households out of which 33.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.5% are married couples living together, 10.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.6% are non-families. 25.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 3.08.

In the town the population is spread out with 16.8% under the age of 18, 10.8% from 18 to 24, 44.2% from 25 to 44, 20.0% from 45 to 64, and 8.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 209.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 240.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $44,877, and the median income for a family is $49,375. Males have a median income of $32,060 versus $22,220 for females. The per capita income for the town is $17,817. 6.3% of the population and 3.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.8% of those under the age of 18 and 5.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Attica -- Part of the Village of Attica is in the north part of the town so that it is partly inside Genesee County.
  • Attica-Wyoming County Correctional Facility complex -- A New York state prison complex, south of Attica Village.
  • Attica Center -- A hamlet southeast of Attica Village on Route 238.
  • Vernal Corners -- A hamlet in the northeast corner of the town.
