Atchison, Kansas

Atchison is the largest city and county seat of Atchison County, Kansas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 10,232. It is named for the senator David Rice Atchison, and was the original eastern terminus of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad.

Atchison was the birthplace of aviator Amelia Earhart. The Amelia Earhart Festival held each July in Atchison annually attracts an estimated 30,000-50,000 people.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 18.7 km² (7.2 mi²). 17.7 km² (6.8 mi²) of it is land and 1.0 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.27% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 10,232 people, 3,863 households, and 2,437 families residing in the city. The population density is 578.4/km² (1,498.2/mi²). There are 4,220 housing units at an average density of 238.6/km² (617.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 88.56% White, 7.80% African American, 0.51% Native American, 0.41% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 0.65% from other races, and 1.99% from two or more races. 2.58% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,863 households out of which 30.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.8% are married couples living together, 12.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.9% are non-families. 32.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the city the population is spread out with 25.7% under the age of 18, 13.8% from 18 to 24, 23.5% from 25 to 44, 19.5% from 45 to 64, and 17.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 88.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $31,109, and the median income for a family is $37,100. Males have a median income of $31,027 versus $20,262 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,441. 17.0% of the population and 9.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 17.4% of those under the age of 18 and 22.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
