Amenia (town), New York

Amenia is a town located in Dutchess County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 4,048. The name is derived from the Latin word, amoena, which means "pleasant to the eye."

The Town of Amenia is on the east border of the county.

History

The town was first established in 1704 and officially founded in 1788.

Geography

The east town line is the border of Connecticut. US Route 44 crosses the north part of the town.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 112.8 km² (43.6 mi²). 112.2 km² (43.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.57% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,048 people, 1,625 households, and 1,074 families residing in the town. The population density is 36.1/km² (93.5/mi²). There are 1,814 housing units at an average density of 16.2/km² (41.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 93.40% White, 2.94% Black or African American, 0.59% Native American, 0.47% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.77% from other races, and 1.83% from two or more races. 3.36% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,625 households out of which 29.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.4% are married couples living together, 9.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.9% are non-families. 27.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 2.97.

In the town the population is spread out with 23.7% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 25.0% from 45 to 64, and 17.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 95.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $39,231, and the median income for a family is $51,294. Males have a median income of $32,038 versus $28,769 for females. The per capita income for the town is $22,095. 8.1% of the population and 3.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.0% of those under the age of 18 and 12.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Amenia -- The hamlet of Amenia is in the northeast part of the town.
  • Amenia Union -- A hamlet on the east town line.
  • Leedsville -- A location in the northeast part of the town, east of Amenia village.
  • Smithfield -- A hamlet on the town line in the northwest part of the town.
  • South Amenia -- A hamlet at the junction of Routes 2 and 3 in the east part of the town.
  • Wassaic -- A hamlet in the south central part of the town.
  • Wassaic Creek -- A stream on the west side of the town, passing through the community of Wassaic.
