Adams is a town located in Jefferson County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 4,782. The town is named after President John Adams.
The Town of Adams also has a village named Adams. The town is centrally located in the county.

History
Settlement began around 1800. The town was surveyed and formed in 1802 and numerous remnants of the native inhabitants were still visible.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 109.9 km² (42.4 mi²). 109.8 km² (42.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.05% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,782 people, 1,864 households, and 1,293 families residing in the town. The population density is 43.5/km² (112.8/mi²). There are 2,019 housing units at an average density of 18.4/km² (47.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.97% White, 0.29% Black or African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.21% from other races, and 0.88% from two or more races. 0.65% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,864 households out of which 35.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% are married couples living together, 9.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.6% are non-families. 24.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 3.05.
In the town the population is spread out with 27.5% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 30.0% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 94.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.0 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $38,012, and the median income for a family is $48,354. Males have a median income of $34,000 versus $25,610 for females. The per capita income for the town is $17,707. 9.6% of the population and 6.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.7% of those under the age of 18 and 7.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
