Abyssocottus |
The deep-sea sculpins (Abyssocottidae) are a small family of sculpins that are almost entirely restricted to Lake Baikal in Siberia, most of them living at depths below 170 m. 23 species in 6 genera are known; some, such as Limnocottus godlewskii and Herzenstein's rough sculpin (Asprocottus herzensteini) are abundant in the lake.
The largest of the family is the red sculpin (Procottus jeittelesii) at just 28cm long, while the dwarf sculpin (Procottus gurwici) reaches just 6cm.
Genera that are sometimes cited as be members of the family include Cyphocottus (Gratzianov, 1902), whose member species are generally classified as Limnocottus, and the Metacottus genera (Taliev, 1946), its species classified as Procottus.
