Story
This is a story about a boy. Like many boys of the 21st century, this boy has a friend from outer space. For this boy, his friend is a blob from the planet, Blobonia. Blob loves jelly beans. Coconut, cola, strawberry, licorice, and more, blob will eat them, and when he does, he turns into amazing things, like ladders, walls, bridges, and even a hummingbird! Together, the boy and his blob must defeat the evil emperor of Blobonia.
History
Developed by David Crane (who also did Pitfall!), the game was named best of show in 1989 at CES. The advocacy group Parents' Choice Foundation awarded with a Parents' Choice Award in 1990.
Overview
A Boy and His Blob: Trouble on Blobonia is a side-scrolling platformer in which you and your friend Blob (full name Blobert) travel together on earth and on Blobonia in a quest to defeat the evil emperor.
Blobert can change into several different items when he is fed jelly beans. A licorice jelly bean, for instance, will change Blobert into a ladder, a honey jelly bean will turn him into a hummingbird. The list is as follows:
- Licorice - Ladder - Climb to high places; same first letter
- Strawberry - Bridge - Walk across gaps; no relation
- Coconut - Coconut - Roll the coconut; the camera follows and you get a "sneak peek"; same thing
- Cola - Bubble - Get inside to float safely underwater; bubbles are in cola drinks
- Cinnamon - Blowtorch - Burn webs; spicy, huh?
- Apple - Jack - Lifts up objects; reference to Kellogg's Apple Jacks
- Vanilla - Umbrella - Fall slowly or protect yourself from falling objects, sounds similar
- Tangerine - Trampoline - Jump very high, sounds similar
- Root Beer - Rocket - Get on and move between worlds; great blasting taste of root beer
- Honey - Hummingbird - Blob will be able to fly to you; sounds similar
- Punch - Hole - Fall through to get to new places; a hole can be punched in things.
- Lime - Key - Unlock doors; key lime is tropical
- Orange - Vitablaster! - Shoot vitamins at enemies; Orange is a good source for vitamins
- Ketchup - You'll have to find this one out yourself...
The boy must make use of all of these jelly beans, collect diamonds and treasure, and defeat the final boss on Blobonia, the emperor, by using vitamins. The emperor has a sweet tooth to the extent that vitamins are fatal.
Sequel
Interestingly, Majesco announced a sequel for Nintendo DS at E3. The game will use 3D graphics, and allegedly takes place 6 years after the first game. The game is scheduled for release on November 11, 2005.
The game will feature 15 differently colored jellybeans and 15 levels. The touchscreen feature of the DS will feature a map and help manage jellybean inventory.
