Russell County (standard abbreviation: RS) is a county located in the state of Kansas. As of 2000, the population is 7,370. Its county seat is Russell.6

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,328 km² (899 mi²). 2,291 km² (885 mi²) of it is land and 37 km² (14 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.59% water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 7,370 people, 3,207 households, and 2,020 families residing in the county. The population density is 3/km² (8/mi²). There are 3,871 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (4/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.58% White, 0.50% Black or African American, 0.56% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.27% from other races, and 0.75% from two or more races. 0.91% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,207 households out of which 25.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.40% are married couples living together, 7.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.00% are non-families. 32.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.23 and the average family size is 2.83.

In the county the population is spread out with 22.40% under the age of 18, 5.80% from 18 to 24, 23.30% from 25 to 44, 24.30% from 45 to 64, and 24.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 92.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $29,284, and the median income for a family is $40,355. Males have a median income of $25,916 versus $17,957 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,073. 12.00% of the population and 9.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.80% of those under the age of 18 and 8.50% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
