Harvey County (standard abbreviation: HV) is a county in the State of Kansas, located in the south central portion of the state, along the Little Arkansas River. The county seat and largest city is Newton. As of 2000, the population is 32,869. The county 'has FIPS Place Code 020079. Harvey County is part of the Wichita, KS Metropolitan Statistical Area which also includes Butler County, KS, Sedgwick County, KS, and Sumner County, KS.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,400 km² (540 mi²). 1,397 km² (539 mi²) of it is land and 3 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.22% water.

As of the census² of 2000, there are 32,869 people, 12,581 households, and 8,932 families residing in the county. The population density is 24/km² (61/mi²). There are 13,378 housing units at an average density of 10/km² (25/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 91.04% White, 1.59% Black or African American, 0.52% Native American, 0.52% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 4.17% from other races, and 2.14% from two or more races. 7.97% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 12,581 households out of which 32.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.20% are married couples living together, 7.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.00% are non-families. 25.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the county the population is spread out with 26.00% under the age of 18, 9.10% from 18 to 24, 26.50% from 25 to 44, 21.60% from 45 to 64, and 16.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 94.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.60 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $40,907, and the median income for a family is $48,793. Males have a median income of $35,037 versus $22,492 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,715. 6.40% of the population and 4.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.50% of those under the age of 18 and 5.00% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
