Butler County (standard abbreviation: BU) is a county located in the state of Kansas. As of 2000, the population is 59,482. The largest city and county seat is El Dorado.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,746 km² (1,446 mi²). 3,698 km² (1,428 mi²) of it is land and 48 km² (19 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.28% water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 59,482 people, 21,527 households, and 16,059 families residing in the county. The population density is 16/km² (42/mi²). There are 23,176 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (16/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 94.94% White, 1.38% Black or African American, 0.91% Native American, 0.40% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.66% from other races, and 1.69% from two or more races. 2.25% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 21,527 households out of which 37.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.60% are married couples living together, 8.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.40% are non-families. 21.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.67 and the average family size is 3.13.

In the county the population is spread out with 28.60% under the age of 18, 8.30% from 18 to 24, 28.80% from 25 to 44, 21.70% from 45 to 64, and 12.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 100.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $45,474, and the median income for a family is $53,632. Males have a median income of $38,675 versus $26,109 for females. The per capita income for the county is $20,150. 7.30% of the population and 5.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.00% of those under the age of 18 and 6.40% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
