Pottawattamie County is a county located in the state of Iowa. As of 2000, the population is 87,704. Its county seats are Council Bluffs, Iowa and Avoca6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,486 km² (960 mi²). 2,472 km² (954 mi²) of it is land and 15 km² (6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.59% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 87,704 people, 33,844 households, and 23,623 families residing in the county. The population density is 35/km² (92/mi²). There are 35,761 housing units at an average density of 14/km² (38/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.98% White, 0.77% Black or African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.48% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.27% from other races, and 1.11% from two or more races. 3.30% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 33,844 households out of which 32.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.60% are married couples living together, 11.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.20% are non-families. 24.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.54 and the average family size is 3.03.

In the county the population is spread out with 26.00% under the age of 18, 9.10% from 18 to 24, 28.60% from 25 to 44, 22.70% from 45 to 64, and 13.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 95.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.60 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $40,089, and the median income for a family is $47,105. Males have a median income of $31,642 versus $24,243 for females. The per capita income for the county is $19,275. 8.40% of the population and 6.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.00% of those under the age of 18 and 6.30% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
