Marshalltown, Iowa

Marshalltown is a city located in Marshall County, Iowa. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 26,009. It is the county seat of Marshall CountyTemplate:GR.

It is the birthplace of actresses Jean Seberg (1938-1979),Mary Beth Hurt, and actor Toby Huss.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 46.7 km² (18.0 mi²). 46.7 km² (18.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.11% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 26,009 people, 10,175 households, and 6,593 families residing in the city. The population density is 557.0/km² (1,442.7/mi²). There are 10,857 housing units at an average density of 232.5/km² (602.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 86.79% White, 1.34% African American, 0.37% Native American, 1.04% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 8.57% from other races, and 1.83% from two or more races. 12.55% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 10,175 households out of which 30.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.5% are married couples living together, 10.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% are non-families. 29.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 3.02.

In the city the population is spread out with 24.5% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 26.0% from 25 to 44, 23.0% from 45 to 64, and 17.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 98.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $35,688, and the median income for a family is $45,315. Males have a median income of $32,800 versus $23,835 for females. The per capita income for the city is $19,113. 12.5% of the population and 8.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 17.5% of those under the age of 18 and 10.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
