Zaanstad (population: 139,774 in 2004) is a municipality in the north-western Netherlands, in the province of North Holland. The municipality covers an area of 83.04 km² (of which 8.79 km² water).
The municipality of Zaanstad consists the following towns, villages and townships: Assendelft, Koog aan de Zaan, Krommenie, Westzaan, Wormerveer, Zaandam, Zaandijk.
Zaanstad was the first industrial city of Europe.

Zaandam
Zaandam is the largest town of the municipality. It is located on the Zaan, close to the North Sea Canal. It received city rights in 1811.
It is notable for having the first McDonald's restaurant in Europe, opened in 1971.
