ZOOM is a television show that aired on PBS between 1972 and 1979. There is also a new version of the show, also on PBS, which premiered in 1999 and is still in production. Both versions of the show are produced by WGBH-TV in Boston.
ZOOM encourages children to "turn off the TV and do it!" On the show, a cast of seven children perform various activities, such as games and plays. The show is unique in that it is made completely with viewer contributions of games, poetry, brainteasers, jokes, recipes, and science experiments. There is also a language game on the show, called Ubbi Dubbi.
Starring seven ordinary children, this series is intended to inspire children to be active investigators, creators, and program-solvers. The show's "ZOOMSci" segment encourages viewers to try the activities shown on ZOOM, and to send in their results. The show is meant to encourage five-to-eleven year olds to become more curious and investigative, and to solve problems. This is kept on track by leading educators.
ZOOM was a new kind of series in the 1970s. Unlike Barney and Friends, it was for the most part unscripted. The children acted like genuine children rather than like child actors.
When ZOOM made a comeback in 1999, parents who had grown up watching it could now share it with their own children, and found that it was very much the same as it had been in the 1970s. The theme song is similar, there's still Ubbi Dubbi, and the children play games requested by other children. Also, just as in the 1970s version, the ZOOM cast on occasion perform skits.
