According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.9 km² (3.1 mi²). 7.5 km² (2.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.88% water.

The racial makeup of the city is 98.37% White, 0.19% African American, 0.69% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.75% from two or more races. 1.50% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 716 households out of which 26.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.3% are married couples living together, 10.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.2% are non-families. 37.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 23.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
