Yaku-shima (屋久島) is an island belonging to Japan, lying south of Kyushu. It is an irregular pentagon, 14 m. in width and the same in length. It is separated from Tanega-shima by the Vincennes Strait (Yaku-kaikyo), 12j m. wide. The highest point on the island is Miyanoura-dake, at 1935m (6,360 ft). It is covered with dense forest, in which there are many Sugi (Cryptomeria japonica), known as Yaku-sugi in Japan.
