Wolfeboro is a town located in Carroll County, New Hampshire. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 6,083.

On the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee, Wolfeboro is a popular summer destination for families from Boston and Southern New Hampshire. The self-appointed town nickname “The Oldest Summer Resort in America” indicates its long history as a summer retreat. Recently, it has also become a popular year-round home for many seeking an idyllic, small town existence. Its downtown is extremely picturesque, with small shops lining the main street and large public docks on the lake shore.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 151.5 km² (58.5 mi²). 125.1 km² (48.3 mi²) of it is land and 26.4 km² (10.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 17.40% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 6,083 people, 2,574 households, and 1,722 families residing in the town. The population density is 48.6/km² (125.9/mi²). There are 3,903 housing units at an average density of 31.2 persons/km² (80.8 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 99.13% White, 0.16% African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.05% from other races, and 0.23% from two or more races. 0.61% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,574 households out of which 26.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.7% are married couples living together, 7.1% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 33.1% are non-families. 28.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.32 and the average family size is 2.83.

In the town the population is spread out with 22.1% under the age of 18, 4.3% from 18 to 24, 23.3% from 25 to 44, 25.8% from 45 to 64, and 24.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 45 years. For every 100 females there are 89.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $44,013, and the median income for a family is $53,269. Males have a median income of $36,433 versus $29,850 for females. The per capita income for the town is $26,361. 6.3% of the population and 3.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 9.0% are under the age of 18 and 2.9% are 65 or older.
