Winterton, Lincolnshire

Template:GBdot Winterton is a small town in North Lincolnshire, close to Scunthorpe and the Humber Bridge. it as a long history going back to Roman times, and several large mosaic floors and other Roman remains have been found there. It was in October 1968 when road widening on the A1077, that workers came across a massive stone coffin containing the skeleton later identified as being that of a young woman aged between 20/25 years of age, who stood 1.6 meters high. She was of high status, as befitting of the high quality coffin made from a single block of limestone, she was also found to be laid on a sheet of lead. Just down the hill from this spot are the remains of one of the winterton roman villa famous for its mosaic pavements where it is most likely she lived.
The late Professor Cameron (in The Place Names of Lincolnshire, Vol 6, p125) thought its name meant, the farmstead, the village or the estate of the Winteringas, who were perhaps followers of someone called Winter or Wintra. In Domesday Book of 1086 it is called variously Wintrintune, once; Wintrintone, four times; Wintritone, twice and Wintretune, once .
Immediately to the north of Winterton is the village of Winteringham which perhaps derives its own name from the same group of people.
