Winter Springs is a city located in Seminole County, Florida. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 31,666.

Geography

Winter Springs is located at 28°41'36" North, 81°16'44" West (28.693221, -81.278855)Template:GR. The city is bounded by Lake Jesup to the north, and is located in north Seminole County, FL. It is considered a suburb of Orlando, Florida and is 30 minutes away from downtown Orlando.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 37.5 km² (14.5 mi²). 37.2 km² (14.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.97% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 31,666 people, 11,774 households, and 8,901 families residing in the city. The population density is 852.0/km² (2,207.3/mi²). There are 12,306 housing units at an average density of 331.1/km² (857.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 88.73% White, 4.59% African American, 0.19% Native American, 1.94% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 2.52% from other races, and 1.99% from two or more races. 10.52% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 11,774 households out of which 38.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.2% are married couples living together, 11.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.4% are non-families. 18.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.69 and the average family size is 3.08.

In the city the population is spread out with 27.0% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 29.4% from 25 to 44, 25.4% from 45 to 64, and 10.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 94.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $53,247, and the median income for a family is $62,682. Males have a median income of $44,716 versus $29,720 for females. The per capita income for the city is $26,166. 4.2% of the population and 3.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.5% of those under the age of 18 and 4.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Winter Springs recently finished Phase I of the Winter Springs Town Centre, which was designed to be an elegant, up-scale downtown center. Included are fountains, benches, and squares, especially the famous "Magnolia Square" fountain and plaza located off of the town centre.

The city has five school located within its city borders: Winter Springs High School, Winter Springs Elementary, Keeth Elementary, Highland Elementary, and Indian Trails Middle School. In addition, the town also has a major distribution center for the United States Postal Office.
