Winifred Burkle is a fictional character played by Amy Acker that appeared in the television series Angel during seasons two through five.
Winifred, or "Fred" as most people called her, was born in Texas. Not much is known about her life there, except that she was very excited to move to "the big city" to go to university. Then she moved to Los Angeles and worked at a public library. When she was shelving a demon language book she read it out loud and was sucked into a portal to the demon dimension Pylea. Five years later she would be rescued by Angel and brought back to Los Angeles.
After a short but difficult period of readjustment, Fred became an integral part of the Angel Investigations team. She also drew the affections of both Charles Gunn and Wesley Wyndam-Pryce, and entered into a year-long relationship with Gunn that unraveled when she witnessed Gunn kill a human in order to stop a seething Fred from doing the same. Fred played a key role in the defeat of Jasmine, freeing Angel from her control by shooting Jasmine and Angel with the same bullet. After Angel Investigations took control of the law firm Wolfram and Hart, Fred became head of the science division. She was killed when the god Illyria took over her body, and died in the arms of Wesley, whom she had finally begun to love. They did not try to bring her back to life, because they were told that, "her soul was destroyed in the fires of Illyria's resurrection."
