Willow Glen is a neighborhood in San Jose, California. The area was annexed to San Jose in 1936. The area is southwest of Downtown San Jose, south of the Midtown and Rose Garden neighborhoods, east of the West Valley neighborhoods, and north of the Cambrian Park neighborhood and the city of Campbell, California. It is mostly an upper-middle class area. Many of the homes were constructed in the 1860s - 1920s, and therefore are some of the oldest homes in San Jose. It is predominantly a bedroom community, with most residents commuting to work elsewhere.
Willow Glen has a small business district on Lincoln Avenue mainly between Minnesota Avenue and Coe Avenue, which has been expanding outward in both directions on Lincoln Avenue.
Locally, Lincoln Avenue has become known as simply "The Avenue". There is a variety of reasonably priced eating establishments and many small retail businesses to explore on the "The Avenue" and side streets. There is something for everyone.
Willow Glen has several traditions. The best known occurs during the Christmas holiday season. Neighbors join together on many streets to provide a uniform display of lighted Christmas trees, with one in front of each house. The practice has been a long-standing tradition which has been growing throughout Willow Glen in recent years. It provides a warm and welcoming sight that many come to see and enjoy.
Another popular event which has become a yearly event is "Dancing On The Avenue". It's a relaxing good time for all with "The Avenue" packed with people, several different bands, arts and crafts and food booths.
Other popular events are neighborhood block parties and block sales during nice weather. The block sales generally have a ton of people who frequent them, so it's best to come early to get the best buys.
Willow Glen is a quiet, well maintained area for the most part. It's a good place to live, which has diversity with a sense of community and caring about one's neighbors. People look out for each other in Willow Glen. What makes Willow Glen unusual and a desirable place to live is that it's a part of a large urban city, San Jose, but yet has maintained a quaint, small town atmosphere and its own identity within the City Of San Jose. It's a combination of factors that make Willow Glen what it is but, mostly it's attributable to the people who reside within Willow Glen and take pride in living there.
