Williamsburg County is a county located in the state of South Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 37,217. Its county seat is Kingstree6.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,427 km² (937 mi²). 2,419 km² (934 mi²) of it is land and 8 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.32% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 37,217 people, 13,714 households, and 10,052 families residing in the county. The population density is 15/km² (40/mi²). There are 15,552 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (17/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 32.74% White, 66.26% Black or African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.16% from other races, and 0.48% from two or more races. 0.73% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 13,714 households out of which 34.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.30% are married couples living together, 22.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.70% are non-families. 24.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.69 and the average family size is 3.22.
In the county, the population is spread out with 28.60% under the age of 18, 9.00% from 18 to 24, 25.70% from 25 to 44, 23.60% from 45 to 64, and 13.00% who are 65 years of age or older.
