Whitney Point, New York

Whitney Point is a village located in Broome County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 965. The name comes from Thomas and William Whitney, early developers.

The Village of Whitney Point, incorporated in 1871, is inside the Town of Triangle. A catasrophic fire almost destroyed the village in 1897. The village is located a the junction of Routes 26, 79. and US Route ll.

Geography

The village is located on the Tioughnioga River.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.8 km² (1.1 mi²). 2.6 km² (1.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 8.26% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 965 people, 397 households, and 244 families residing in the village. The population density is 372.6/km² (966.2/mi²). There are 432 housing units at an average density of 166.8/km² (432.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 96.89% White, 0.21% African American, 0.31% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 0.52% from other races, and 1.76% from two or more races. 1.55% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 397 households out of which 35.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.1% are married couples living together, 13.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.3% are non-families. 31.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 3.09.

In the village the population is spread out with 28.3% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 88.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.1 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $34,934, and the median income for a family is $44,667. Males have a median income of $30,875 versus $27,143 for females. The per capita income for the village is $17,608. 13.2% of the population and 10.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.0% of those under the age of 18 and 4.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
