White Center, Washington

White Center is a census-designated place and neighborhood located six miles south of downtown Seattle in unincorporated King County, Washington, USA, just north of Burien. It also extends a few blocks north into Seattle past the city limits at S.W. Roxbury Street.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, White Center has a total area of 8.8 km² (3.4 mi²). 8.8 km² (3.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.29% is water. Late in 2004 the city of Burien, Washington released a draft study for the annexation of all or part of White Center.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 20,975 people, 7,542 households, and 5,143 families residing in White Center. The population density is 2,388.9/km² (6,194.9/mi²). There are 7,775 housing units at an average density of 885.5/km² (2,296.3/mi²). The racial makeup of White Center is 54.96% White, 6.41% Black or African American, 2.01% Native American, 21.09% Asian, 2.60% Pacific Islander, 6.89% from other races, and 6.05% from two or more races. 11.98% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. Being one of the most racially diverse neighborhoods of Seattle, it leads one to wonder how it got its name because it is neither white nor the center.
There are 7,542 households out of which 35.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.3% are married couples living together, 16.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.8% are non-families. 23.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.78 and the average family size is 3.29.
Its population is spread out with 27.1% under the age of 18, 9.6% from 18 to 24, 31.8% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 9.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 101.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.0 males.
The median income for a household in White Center is $40,480, and the median income for a family is $43,038. Males have a median income of $34,937 versus $27,391 for females. The per capita income for White Center is $17,339. 14.7% of the population and 12.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.9% of those under the age of 18 and 6.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
