Wheatland, New York

Wheatland is a town located in Monroe County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 5,149.

The Town of Wheatland is located in the southwest part of the county.

History

The first settlers arrived around 1789. The town was established in 1821 as the Town of Inverness, but changed the name within a year to Wheatland.

Geography

The south town line is the border of Livingston County, New York. Oatka Creek in the town is a tributary of the Genesee River. The New York State Thruway crosses the north part of the town.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 79.5 km² (30.7 mi²). 79.3 km² (30.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.26% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,149 people, 2,011 households, and 1,425 families residing in the town. The population density is 64.9/km² (168.1/mi²). There are 2,093 housing units at an average density of 26.4/km² (68.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 92.99% White, 4.02% African American, 0.39% Native American, 0.82% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.82% from other races, and 0.91% from two or more races. 2.18% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,011 households out of which 33.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.6% are married couples living together, 9.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.1% are non-families. 22.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.02.

In the town the population is spread out with 26.5% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 30.3% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 11.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $55,239, and the median income for a family is $63,297. Males have a median income of $41,733 versus $30,733 for females. The per capita income for the town is $24,024. 3.5% of the population and 2.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.2% of those under the age of 18 and 2.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Communities and locations in Wheatland

  • Belcola -- A hamlet north of Mumford.
  • Beulah -- A location in the northwest corner of the town.
  • Garbutt -- A location on Route 383 between Wheatland Center and Scottsville.
  • Genesee Country Village -- A historic recreation of life in Genesee Country in the 19th Century is west of Mumford.
  • Mumford -- This hamlet is the location of the Genesee Country Village and Museum, an historic exhibit of late 19th Century Western New York. The community was originally called Mackenzies Corners, but changed its name to Mumfordsville after one of later citizens. Mumford is near the south town line in the western part of the town on Route 383.
  • Oatka Creek Park -- A park near Garbutt on the Oatka Creek.
  • Scottsville -- The Village of Scottsville in the northeast part of the town on Route 251.
  • Wheatland Center -- A hamlet on Route 383 near the Oatka Creek.
