Westwood is a town located in Norfolk County, Massachusetts. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 14,117.

History

Westwood was first settled in 1640 and was part of the town of Dedham (it was originally called 'West Dedham') until it was officially incorporated in 1897.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 28.8 km² (11.1 mi²). 28.4 km² (11.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.35% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 14,117 people, 5,122 households, and 3,867 families residing in the town. The population density is 496.9/km² (1,286.7/mi²). There are 5,251 housing units at an average density of 184.8/km² (478.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 95.98% White, 0.50% African American, 0.04% Native American, 2.48% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.21% from other races, and 0.79% from two or more races. 0.94% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,122 households out of which 36.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.1% are married couples living together, 6.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.5% are non-families. 22.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.73 and the average family size is 3.24.

In the town the population is spread out with 27.8% under the age of 18, 3.4% from 18 to 24, 25.4% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 90.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.5 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $87,394, and the median income for a family is $103,242. Males have a median income of $71,801 versus $46,194 for females. The per capita income for the town is $41,553. 2.5% of the population and 1.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 1.5% of those under the age of 18 and 5.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.


Interest

Has the remains of a cave along Route 109 that King Philip and his men hid in during King Philip's War. The massive rock that once contained the cave was known as the Withces Cauldron. It was blown up along with most of the cave in the 1950's in order to straighten out Route 109.
