Westphalia, Michigan

Westphalia is a village located in Clinton County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 876.

The village is within Westphalia Township in the western portion of Clinton County, about 8 miles north of Interstate 96 on county roads and about 15 miles northwest of Lansing.

History

Westphalia was founded in 1836 by a group of German settlers. It was named after the province of Westphalia in Germany.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 3.0 km² (1.1 mi²). 3.0 km² (1.1 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 876 people, 342 households, and 251 families residing in the village. The population density is 296.7/km² (765.7/mi²). There are 350 housing units at an average density of 118.5/km² (305.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 99.43% White, 0.00% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.34% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 342 households out of which 32.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.7% are married couples living together, 4.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.6% are non-families. 24.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 3.07.

In the village the population is spread out with 27.9% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 26.6% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 94.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.9 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $52,500, and the median income for a family is $58,864. Males have a median income of $40,781 versus $31,827 for females. The per capita income for the village is $20,112. 4.2% of the population and 3.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.3% of those under the age of 18 and 9.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
