West York Island
|
West York Island is a small sandy atoll of roughly 2 km2, in the disputed Spratly Islands group, in the South China Sea. It is 530 yards wide at its widest part, and 330 yards in length. Its greatest height is 30m, and it is covered with low vegetation and scrub. It has no indigenous population, although it is currently occupied and claimed by the Philippine armed forces.
There are no buildings on the Island, except for the ruins of houses built by the Japanese during World War II, and a small Philippine observation post.
