West Vancouver is a Canadian city in the province of British Columbia. It is home to more than 41,421 as of 2001. The current mayor is Ron Wood. Cypress Provincial Park will be one of the venues for the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Geography and Location

West Vancouver is situated at 49° 19' N 123° 9' W, in the Pacific Time Zone (UTC-8). West Vancouver is a part of the Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) in the Province of British Columbia, Canada, located north of the City of Vancouver on Burrard Inlet and Howe Sound. It is located on the North Shore and is adjoined by the District of North Vancouver.

Industry

West Vancouver is home to many attractions, which includes Cypress Bowl Mountain, one of the venues for the 2010 Winter Olympics. While Ambleside Park and the West Vancouver Seawall is also popular spot for cyclists and outdoor enthusiasts. Whytecliff Park is regarded as one of the best Scuba diving spots in Western Canada.

Transportation

It takes between 10 (closest area) to 50 minutes to get to downtown Vancouver by West Vancouver's Blue Bus, which run very frequently with various routes (see http://translink.bc.ca for routes). You can also possibly drive, walk, or bike across the Lion's Gate Bridge. Also, you can get to Horseshoe Bay and take a ferry from there to Nanaimo, Bowen Island and the Sunshine Coast.

Scenery

It is known for its parks like Cypress Provincial Park, which offers scenic views of Howe Sound and the Greater Vancouver area.

Affluency

West Vancouver is home to some very large and expensive properties and houses. Recently, a house was sold for about CAD 20,000,000. West Vancouver's average house sells for over CAD 1,000,000. West Vancouver is often referred to as the most expensive part of Canada.

Political Views

West Vancouver is widly regarded as a very Conservative district. Provinically, it elected Joan McIntyre for the BC Liberal Party and Ralph Sultan for the BC Liberal Party. Federally, West Vancouver votes Conserative, electing John Reynolds of the Conservative Party of Canada.
