West Elmira is a census-designated place and community located in Chemung County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 5,136.
Geography
West Elmira is located at 42°4'59" North, 76°50'39" West (42.082974, -76.844046)Template:GR.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the region has a total area of 8.1 km² (3.1 mi²). 7.8 km² (3.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.89% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 5,136 people, 2,161 households, and 1,504 families residing in the community. The population density is 658.8/km² (1,705.3/mi²). There are 2,266 housing units at an average density of 290.7/km² (752.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 95.91% White, 1.83% African American, 0.08% Native American, 1.44% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.18% from other races, and 0.56% from two or more races. 0.51% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,161 households out of which 29.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.5% are married couples living together, 7.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.4% are non-families. 27.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size is 2.87.
In the area the population is spread out with 23.2% under the age of 18, 5.0% from 18 to 24, 23.4% from 25 to 44, 27.9% from 45 to 64, and 20.7% who are 65 years of age or older.
