Weslaco is a city located in Hidalgo County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 26,935. Weslaco derives its name from the W.E. Stewart Land Company.
Geography
Weslaco is located at 26°9'33" North, 97°59'15" West (26.159130, -97.987374)Template:GR.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 33.0 km² (12.8 mi²). 32.9 km² (12.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.55% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 26,935 people, 8,295 households, and 6,602 families residing in the city. The population density is 819.5/km² (2,123.1/mi²). There are 10,230 housing units at an average density of 311.3/km² (806.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 74.92% White, 0.27% African American, 0.49% Native American, 1.14% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 20.93% from other races, and 2.19% from two or more races. 83.76% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 8,295 households out of which 41.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.2% are married couples living together, 17.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.4% are non-families. 18.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.21 and the average family size is 3.68.
In the city the population is spread out with 31.8% under the age of 18, 9.9% from 18 to 24, 25.9% from 25 to 44, 17.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.1% who are 65 years of age or older.
