Wellsburg is a city in Brooke County, West Virginia, zip code 26070. In 1990 it had a population of 3,385. The town was named for Alexander Wells, son-in-law of Charles Prater, builder of the first large flour warehouse in the east. The town was laid out in 1790, and its post office was opened on September 1, 1870. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 2,891. It is the county seat of Brooke CountyTemplate:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.6 km² (1.4 mi²). 2.4 km² (0.9 mi²) of it is land and 1.2 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 33.09% water.

The racial makeup of the city is 96.68% White, 2.01% African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.03% from other races, and 1.07% from two or more races. 0.24% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,361 households out of which 20.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.1% are married couples living together, 9.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.1% are non-families. 37.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.12 and the average family size is 2.78.
