Wayne Township, New Jersey

Wayne Township is a census-designated place and township located in Passaic County, New Jersey. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 54,069. Wayne Township is governed under the Faulkner Act (Mayor-Council) system of municipal government.

Educational institutions

The town operates two libraries, nine elementary schools, two intermediate schools, and two high schools. There are also other private elementary and high schools in the town, most of which are parochial schools.

The school district is divided in two by Ratzer Road, with the north side attending Wayne Hills High School and the south side attending Wayne Valley High School.

Theunis Dey Elementary school services the region enclosed by Route 23, Ratzer Rd, and a point on Black Oak Ridge Road.

Wayne is also the home to William Paterson University.

Corporate residents

Wayne is home to Drake's, a company that is owned by the IBC. Toys "Я" Us' corporate headquarters is located in Wayne. The GAF Materials Corporation also has its world headquarters in Wayne. Also, BAE Systems has a facility in Wayne.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 65.2 km² (25.2 mi²). 61.7 km² (23.8 mi²) of it is land and 3.5 km² (1.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.44% water.

Wayne is home to several lakes. Some of the larger lakes are Pines Lake and Packanack Lake.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 54,069 people, 18,755 households, and 14,366 families residing in the township. The population density is 876.4/km² (2,269.5/mi²). There are 19,218 housing units at an average density of 311.5/km² (806.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 90.05% White, 1.66% African American, 0.10% Native American, 5.67% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.17% from other races, and 1.34% from two or more races. 5.09% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 18,755 households out of which 34.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.4% are married couples living together, 7.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.4% are non-families. 20.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.74 and the average family size is 3.19.

In the township the population is spread out with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 24.9% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 90.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.4 males.

The median income for a household in the township is $83,651, and the median income for a family is $95,114. Males have a median income of $61,271 versus $39,835 for females. The per capita income for the township is $35,349. 2.8% of the population and 1.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.1% of those under the age of 18 and 4.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Interesting facts

Some notable people that currently, or who previously lived in Wayne, NJ include: Alan Alda, Tom Cruise, and Darryl "DMC" McDaniels. George Washington resided in Dey Mansion (before the area was called Wayne) during the American Revolutionary War.

The Triple Crown race the Preakness Stakes was named after a race horse from the Preakness Stables, Wayne, New Jersey who won the Dinner-Stakes race at Pimlico, Maryland sponsored by the Maryland Jockey Club on October 25th, 1870.

The indie rock band Fountains of Wayne takes their name from a lawn ornament store located in the township on U.S. Highway 46, westbound.
