Waxahachie, Texas

Waxahachie is a city located in Ellis County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 21,426. It is the county seat of Ellis CountyTemplate:GR.

Waxahachie is located at 32°23'59" North, 96°50'50" West (32.399861, -96.847291)Template:GR, approximately 30 miles south from Dallas, Texas.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 106.6 km² (41.2 mi²). 103.5 km² (40.0 mi²) of it is land and 3.1 km² (1.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.91% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 21,426 people, 7,325 households, and 5,398 families residing in the city. The population density is 207.0/km² (536.1/mi²). There are 7,909 housing units at an average density of 76.4/km² (197.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 70.45% White, 17.10% African American, 0.76% Native American, 0.40% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 9.33% from other races, and 1.96% from two or more races. 19.74% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,325 households out of which 36.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.7% are married couples living together, 14.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.3% are non-families. 21.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.73 and the average family size is 3.18.

In the city the population is spread out with 26.9% under the age of 18, 13.3% from 18 to 24, 28.0% from 25 to 44, 19.4% from 45 to 64, and 12.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 93.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $43,213, and the median income for a family is $50,048. Males have a median income of $32,597 versus $23,838 for females. The per capita income for the city is $19,003. 12.8% of the population and 10.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.3% of those under the age of 18 and 11.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

The city is home to Southwestern Assemblies of God University. From 1902 to 1942, this campus was occupied by Trinity University, now located in San Antonio, Texas. It is widely known for being the site of the now-defunct Superconducting Super Collider.
