Wawatam Township is a township located in Emmet County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 705.
The village of Mackinaw City is located mostly within the township.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 52.7 km² (20.4 mi²). 40.7 km² (15.7 mi²) of it is land and 12.0 km² (4.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 22.79% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 705 people, 329 households, and 207 families residing in the township. The population density is 17.3/km² (44.8/mi²). There are 587 housing units at an average density of 14.4/km² (37.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 94.33% White, 0.28% African American, 4.40% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.85% from two or more races. 0.85% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 329 households out of which 23.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.9% are married couples living together, 7.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.8% are non-families. 31.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.14 and the average family size is 2.66.
