Waverly is a village located in Tioga County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 4,607. The name is derived from the novel Waverley by Walter Scott. The village is adjacent to NY Route 17, the Southern Tier Expressway.

The Village of Waverly is in the southwest part of the Town of Barton, but it is so close to the state border that part of a much larger community that runs into Bradford County, Pennsylvania, merging with Sayre, Pennsylvania.

Geography

Waverly is located at 42°0'19" North, 76°32'16" West (42.005247, -76.537892)Template:GR.

The village is on the east side of the Chemung River and is north of the confluence of the Chemung with the Susquehanna River.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 6.1 km² (2.3 mi²). 5.9 km² (2.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.14% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 4,607 people, 1,877 households, and 1,128 families residing in the village. The population density is 776.8/km² (2,013.3/mi²). There are 2,052 housing units at an average density of 346.0/km² (896.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 97.63% White, 0.63% African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.50% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.30% from other races, and 0.69% from two or more races. 1.24% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,877 households out of which 30.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.0% are married couples living together, 13.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.9% are non-families. 33.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.32 and the average family size is 2.98.

In the village the population is spread out with 24.0% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 20.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 84.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 78.8 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $28,958, and the median income for a family is $39,522. Males have a median income of $31,544 versus $24,492 for females. The per capita income for the village is $14,945. 13.3% of the population and 9.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.3% of those under the age of 18 and 5.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
