Washo language
|
The Washo language (also "Washoe") is a Native American language spoken by the Washoe in Nevada and California. While there are very few speakers of Washo today, there are Washo language programs aimed at increasing the number of proficient speakers.
Washo is unique when compared to the Native American languages that border it, and is not related to any of them. While Washo is commonly placed in the Hokan stock of languages, there is little evidence for this grouping and many consider Washo a language isolate.
