Warrandyte, Victoria
|
Warrandyte is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 24km east-north-east of Melbourne. Its Local Government Area is the City of Manningham.
Gold was discovered at Anderson's Creek, in Warrandyte by Louis Michel in 1851, the start of the Victorian gold rush. The approximate location, in a nature reserve, is marked by a cairn.
The Yarra River through Warrandyte shows signs of being exploited, a classic example is the pound bend tunnel that was created by early settlers to help find gold.
Warrandyte, while not far from the city, still retains much native forest in reserves and has a distinctly rural "bush" feel. It, along with neighbouring Eltham, is somewhat of a centre for artists.
