Warm Springs, Georgia

Warm Springs is a city located in Meriwether County, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 485. It first rose to prominence in the 19th century as a spa town, due to its mineral springs which flow constantly at nearly 90° Fahrenheit. It became known to the nation and the world, however, as the vacation retreat of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who first came in the 1920s in hopes that the warm water would improve his polio-induced paraplegia. He was a constant visitor for two decades and died there in 1945.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.1 km² (1.2 mi²). 3.1 km² (1.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.83% is water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 485 people, 175 households, and 110 families residing in the city. The population density is 158.7/km² (409.7/mi²). There are 208 housing units at an average density of 68.1/km² (175.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 67.22% White, 31.75% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.03% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 175 households out of which 26.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 34.3% are married couples living together, 25.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.6% are non-families. 34.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.33 and the average family size is 2.99.

In the city the population is spread out with 21.2% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 22.1% from 25 to 44, 20.6% from 45 to 64, and 28.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 45 years. For every 100 females there are 62.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 57.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $29,375, and the median income for a family is $37,778. Males have a median income of $32,250 versus $20,938 for females. The per capita income for the city is $20,924. 16.4% of the population and 14.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 21.7% of those under the age of 18 and 9.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
