Walton is a town located in Delaware County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 5,607.
The Town of Walton contains a village of Walton. The town claims to be the "Scarecrow capital of the World." The town is in the west-central part of the county.

History
The town was formed in 1797 from the Town of Franklin. The original settlement area, near the site of the Village of Walton, occurred in 1785.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 252.9 km² (97.6 mi²). 251.7 km² (97.2 mi²) of it is land and 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.44% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,607 people, 2,391 households, and 1,570 families residing in the town. The population density is 22.3/km² (57.7/mi²). There are 2,958 housing units at an average density of 11.7/km² (30.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.81% White, 0.34% Black or African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.50% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.20% from other races, and 0.91% from two or more races. 1.03% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,391 households out of which 28.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.4% are married couples living together, 11.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.3% are non-families. 29.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.33 and the average family size is 2.85.
In the town the population is spread out with 23.5% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 26.5% from 45 to 64, and 17.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 92.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.8 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $30,550, and the median income for a family is $41,464. Males have a median income of $27,463 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the town is $16,779. 12.1% of the population and 9.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.7% of those under the age of 18 and 8.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
