Marquess of Ripon
|
Marquess of Ripon was a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom.
The Marquess bore the subsidiary titles of Earl of Ripon, Viscount Goderich, Baron Grantham, and Earl de Grey (qv). The Barony of Grantham in the Peerage of Great Britain was created for the politician Sir Thomas Robinson, Bt, in 1761. The Viscountcy of Goderich was first created in the Peerage of England in 1706 for Henry Grey, 12th Earl of Kent, along with the Earldom of Harold, as a subsidiary title of the Marquessate of Kent. It became extinct on the first holder's death in 1740. The Viscountcy of Goderich was created a second time in 1827, in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, for the first holder's great-great-grandson, Frederick John Robinson, Chancellor of the Exchequer and brother of the 3rd Baron Grantham. Lord Goderich served as Prime Minister from 1827 to 1828, and was created Earl of Ripon in 1833. The Marquessate of Ripon was created for his son George, 2nd Earl of Ripon in 1871. All the titles became extinct in 1923.
