As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 3,338 people, 1,239 households, and 900 families residing in the town. The population density is 265.7/km² (688.5/mi²). There are 1,452 housing units at an average density of 115.6/km² (299.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 74.57% White, 23.31% African American, 0.60% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 0.09% from other races, and 1.14% from two or more races. 0.90% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,239 households out of which 35.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.0% are married couples living together, 17.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.3% are non-families. 23.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.65 and the average family size is 3.11.
