Vinean

Vineans are a species from the Yoko Tsuno comics by the Belgian comic artist Roger Leloup. Vineans are blue-skinned and their physiology is magnetic rather than biological. Otherwise, they perfectly resemble humans.

Vineans are from the planet Vinea, in a binary star system about 3,000,000 ly from Earth. When one of their suns was about to regress in an unstable orbit millions of years ago it was decided to send out a series of spaceships containing millions of their people in hibernation, so the planet could at least be partially evacuated. After a long journey one of these ships discovered Earth, but because of a primitive intelligent species emerging on the planet it was decided to move underground and to not disturb the natural evolution of the humans. Large underground tunnels and cities emerged while on the surface the human species slowly developed. At some point in the 20th century a project was staged to create an artificial island, by diverting undersea lava flows. This plan was diverted in favor of creating an FTL technology capable of reaching Vinea in less than 3 months. This technology was discovered when a machine for the purpose of creating a wormhole arived in the solar system, indicating that at least until the probe was send, some 100,000 years after the Earth-Vineans left Vinea, there was still an advanced society in the Vinean solar system.

When an expedition was send out to Vinea, it seemd that the local population had regressed to rather primitive societies, governed by a group of artificial copies of the minds of great leaders in the Vinean past. The decayed orbit of the suns was compensated by large space mirrors acting as artificial suns. A project for relocating the Earth-Vinean population was issued, and the rebuilding of the planet was soon started. It was however discovered that an species of giant insects had colonised a remote region of Vinea. After some difficult cultural clashes the species agreed to leave Vinea and settle on another planet.

Vineans and Vinea have been the subject of several Yoko Tsuno stories, such as:

  • Trio in the unknown
  • Vulcans' forge
  • The 3 suns of Vinea
  • The titans
  • The light of Ixo
  • The archangels of Vinea
  • The exiles from Kifa
  • The gate of the souls

Among the key Vinean technologies are

  • magnetic rail trains
  • artificial intelligence
  • laser weapons (with vaporition mode)
  • interplanetary travel at near-lightspead
  • wormhole technology for FTL travel
  • advanced tunneling devices
  • advanced building materials
  • advanced space structures
  • large thermal weapons
  • universal translators

Key Vinean characters are:

  • Khany
  • Poky
