According to the United States Census Bureau, this unincorporated area in Indian River County has a total area of 28.2 km² (10.9 mi²). 26.8 km² (10.3 mi²) of it is land and 1.5 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.23% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 20,362 people, 8,649 households, and 5,881 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 760.3/km² (1,969.8/mi²). There are 9,505 housing units at an average density of 354.9/km² (919.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 94.18% White, 2.29% African American, 0.32% Native American, 0.94% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.79% from other races, and 1.40% from two or more races. 3.37% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 8,649 households out of which 27.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.7% are married couples living together, 10.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.0% are non-families. 26.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.34 and the average family size is 2.81.
In the CDP the population is spread out with 21.9% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 25.1% from 45 to 64, and 21.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 90.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.7 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP is $39,569, and the median income for a family is $46,664. Males have a median income of $32,079 versus $24,506 for females.
