The Vermont Constitution is the governing document of the U.S. state of Vermont.
The first constitution of Vermont, adopted in 1777, was that of the Vermont Republic. That document was the first written national constitution in North America. At the time Vermont operated independently of the United States; it did not join the United States until 1791. The Vermont constitution was the first in the country to ban slavery, as well as the first to grant voting rights to those who did not own land.
The current constitution of Vermont was adopted in 1793.
