Värmdö is a Municipality in eastern Stockholm County, in central Sweden. To the municipality belongs over 24,000 islets of different sizes, making a part of Stockholm archipelago.
The municipal seat is located in Gustavsberg, most known for its manufacturing of china products distributed nationwide, such as toilets bowls. With the municipal reform in the 1970's, Värmdö became a municipality and adapted the city arms of Gustavsbergs depicting two porcelain ovens.
The industry of the municipality was dominated by the porcelain factory, established in the 1820's. Around the year 1900, 1,000 people were employed there, making it one of the largest working places in Sweden.
During the summer the population of the municipality more than doubles due to the large number of tourists and vacation houses.
The name Värmdö can be traced to the 14th century, but it is not clear what it means. The area has however been inhibited longer than that, probably from the Stone Age wherefrom remains are found. The people lived on fishing and the hunting of seals and sea birds.
