Possible copyright violations

Hi Zanuga and welcome to Wikipedia!

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news so early in your wiki experience, but I've listed two pages you contributed Trekka and Opotiki as possible copyright violations, since they have material in them that seems to have been copied directly from other websites :(

I hope that this won't put you off and that you'll want to contribute more articles on New Zealand topics! Please remember though that everything submitted here has to be all in your own words, or from a source in the "public domain" (ie with an expired copyright, or which the author has released from copyright).

If you have any questions, please feel free to leave a message for me --Rlandmann 22:46, 28 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Hi again - just letting you know I got your email. It's more usual around here, though, to leave a message on people's talk pages - mine is here.
If you can get permission from owners of copyright material to contribute it to Wikipedia, then by all means do so. In these cases, it's usual to make a note about such permission either in the references section of the article, or on the article's discussion page. If for no other reason, this will prevent other wikipedians from suspecting it a copyvio. When asking permission from copyright holders, it's important to make sure that they understand that be licencing something to Wikipedia, they're also releasing it for potentially endless copying, so they have to be comfortable with the idea of essentially losing control over their text. See here for some suggestions of how to go about asking permission.
As far as copying extracts is concerned, you may be thinking of the "fair use"/"fair dealing" provisions that allow for the copying of up to 10% of a text, but only for very specific purposes such as educational use or research. It doesn't allow for any republishing of the material, whether it's referenced or not...
In any case, the real issue here is about licencing. Anyone who contributes an article to Wikipedia still owns the copyright to his/her contribution, but licences Wikipedia to use that content (and, be extension, to allow other parties to use and redistribute under the terms of Wikipedia's own copyright). A problem arises, then, with copied material because the person contributing it isn't able to grant Wikipedia a licence to use it, because s/he doesn't own it in the first place... You can find more info on this in the "Contributor's rights and obligations" section of Wikipedia:Copyrights.
I'm not a lawyer, though, and if you want to know more, you could take it up either on the Wikipedia:Copyright Problems page, where the two articles are still listed (awaiting deletion), or ask about copyrights more generally at the Village Pump
Sorry that's so long-winded - I hope I've been able to address your concerns though. Please get back to me if I can be of any more help. --Rlandmann 08:31, 12 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Welcome from another Kiwi

Hello, Zanuga. I noticed your addition of Whakatohea to the iwi article - combining that with your work on Opotiki suggested to me that you must be "local". I hope you enjoy contributing here; and I hope you discover Wikipedia Maori, even if (like me) your first language is English. You can start with the mostly-Maori home page (http://mi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hau_K%C4%81inga) or the mostly-English Community_Portal (http://mi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Community_Portal). Kia ora! Hi Dad!

Found you! :p

By the way, I moved Opotiki, New Zealand to Opotiki, which you could add to. ··gracefool | 04:49, 20 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Flatulence

The euphemisms are deleted because they are endless. Wikipedia is not a thesaurus. JFW | T@lk 16:26, 26 May 2005 (UTC)
