Welcome from Meelar

Hello and welcome to Wikipedia! Hope you like it here, and stick around.

Here are some tips to help you get started:

Good luck!

Enigma

Hi, and thanks for looking over Enigma! Just to clarify: I made an edit and it "conflicted" with yours. Because I'd made extensive changes, I temporarily discarded your changes in that edit, planning to go back and look to see what you had done, and redo your change; however looking at it, I've reworded that section anyway, so reinserting your change isn't necessary. Phew! — Matt 04:26, 29 Jul 2004 (UTC)

wagtail

Open country isn't a compound word and shouldn't be hyphenated anyway. I lazily reverted instead of editing, and lost the correct hyphen mark-up too, which I've now reinstated -sorry jimfbleak 06:57, 16 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Hyphens

It is not necessary, and not desirable, to change the hyphen to the n-dash. The hyphen is a standard character on the keyboard, in the character set, and, most importantly, in language usage. If language usage calls for a hyphen, the hyphen on the keyboard is the way to go: easy to type, simple to encode, and accurate.

Franz Josef Land

I think it's safe to say you're right about 1986 not being the correct date. :) So, I have to assume the 8 and 9 were transposed, and went ahead and made the change.

Grammar test (hang in there)

I see you've been savaged on this topic by the Wikipedia community. Don't take it to heart. You really haven't established yourself on Wikipedia until you've riled a substantial number of editors, and you get bonus points for annoying admins ☺ (as long as you aren't violating the policy suite-du-jour, that is).

I added my own criticism from a practicality POV. I've found that many a good idea gets crushed under the weight of practical considerations. But one can't figure these things out without asking, and the Wiki community is a great place to get lots of input, if one can stand the occasional mockery, which you seem to be doing with aplomb. Hang in there! — fellow (former) North Carolinian, Jeff Q 12:09, 12 Feb 2005 (UTC)

School

"Have you studied music through any music programs? If so, where and how did you enter it? I want to study music, but I'm afraid that since I did not receive any form of formal classical study I will not be accepted. Jaberwocky6669 23:41, Mar 12, 2005 (UTC)"

I took orchestra in public school, and music theory I (twice). Two years after high school I went to the University of Montana for one semester. If you are born in Montana you're pretty much garaunteed acceptance. However, from what I've heard, the head of the music department was very discouraging to some people who haven't studied enough in his opinion. As he the composition professor, and I was a composition major, he gave me a C in aural skills (ear training), even though I only went to literally half the classes.

I've been accepted to the California Institute of the Arts ([1] (http://www.calarts.org/)) but cannot afford to go (though this is the first year I'm officially independent from my parents). To apply you submit the application and a portfolio (or audition). As a composition aplicant I submitted a portfolio containing a CD with pieces I'd written and recorded and scores. I bound the scores with a clear cover and cover letter and glued the CD to the posterboard back. With my application I had letters of recommendation from my high school orchestra and theory teacher, and from my college semester music technology professor ([2] (http://www.charlesnichols.com/)).

I don't know because I haven't been there but I assume your concern is fairly valid, depending on where you want to go to school they may or may not expect previous study. Did you take band, orchestra, or choir in high school? Have you taken private lessons on an instrument or voice? Are you in a band or ensemble? Those teachers should be able to give you letters of recommendation, and probably advice about getting into school. Any proof that you're currently musical active is good too.

Go to the school's websites and read their requirements for music applicants. I don't think any of them absolutely require any one thing, such as having taken public school classes, so if you are stronger or more active in one area it compensates. Hyacinth 03:39, 13 Mar 2005 (UTC)

  • I did not take any music classes in High school though I wanted to. I took 10 years of guitar lessons, but I finally realized that I wanted to play another instrument. I didn't advance too well with the guitar lol. I think I want to play a bowed instrument like a cello or violin.

Contact your guitar teacher and ask for a letter of recommendation. A school with a small music department may looking to increase their size (and thus sway and funds), and they'll let you know you're welcome. I don't know about larger schools or depts. Perhaps prepare an essay or article about music, and a personal essay that relates why you want to study music and how it is important to you. I think every school requires an audition (or portfolio), but it may be cursory. Hyacinth 07:20, 13 Mar 2005 (UTC)

RE: Once upon a time

Sorry, I was going through some pages on my user section and must have accidentally marked that one for removal.

(Would it be possible to reverse it? Your ideas sounded really cool from the little I read before inserting the fateful {{delete}} tags...)

Hi! I replied to your message on Wikipedia talk:Criteria for speedy deletion. (Meant to do it here, but got mixed up. Oh well.) --Fbriere 04:34, 29 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Hi. I noticed Ayinyud's alternative proposal on the discussion page -- and well, I ran with it -- all over the place. Be Bold! So please drop over and look at the messes I've made. Below is my initial note on the discussion page.

"I'll join in, but I think we all have to take some initiative to get this off the ground. The time constraints may be the main difficulty. After all, everyone here does have a real life, don't they? What if we took the info above (Gkhan's characters and basic concept), claimed a chapter, wrote from one of the listed characters or additional character's POV (I'll be Ethelynn, the new upstairs maid - Chapter 7, User:WBardwin/Chapter.), and then put it together and edit jointly for content and flow? Each character would tell about events before, the murder, and events after from their POV, then we would have different snapshots to work from. We could then jointly write the revelation of the murderer and the conclusion. Having the first chapter to work from would be important, however. How goes it. Gkhan?"

I dropped other ideas all over the place - and reformated the project page. Two other users I've heard from aren't too thrilled. But Gkhan is discouraged from lack of feedback and "tired" of it already (see Gkhan/WBardwin talk pages). From the lack of activity related to the site, nothing is going to happen soon unless we all chip in. Please take a look! WBardwin 00:03, 31 May 2005 (UTC)

N degrees of separation

Sorry, made a real mess of things by misunderstanding the rules of the game. Have tried to put things back as they should be - if you get a chance to check, please do. Thanks, Ben --Bwmodular 11:25, 5 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Car wash article

Hi, Matt! I didn't list your article as a copyvio, but as a candidate as a transwiki to the Wikisource site. It'll actually be more visible there. Sorry about the misunderstanding. Best, Lucky 6.9 03:44, 6 Apr 2005 (UTC)

  • Strange this would wind up on VfD in the first place. I didn't know it had been listed there until just this moment. It's a well-written article by an establised user which, as I pointed out, is better served on one of the other wikis. Truly weird. There are other articles of a similar vein including one on dishwashing. - Lucky 6.9 03:58, 6 Apr 2005 (UTC)
    • OK, I've voted to keep this. In fact, copying this to Wikibooks and Wikisource might be a good idea for maximum exposure. Again, I'm terribly sorry for upsetting you. - Lucky 6.9 04:06, 6 Apr 2005 (UTC)
  • Not a problem, my friend. I wish I had the proverbial dime for every screw-up I've managed to pull on this site in the last year. - Lucky 6.9 04:11, 6 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Mind Benders

Hello! I've noticed your past interest in Wikipedia:Mind Benders and wanted to share the following announcement with you! I've taken over the responsibilities of Mind Benders, and the page will now be regularly updated. Right now, the pre-round is open (it's more of a creative artistic competition), and round one will open soon (the questions are done, we just need to wait for the pre-round to begin/finish)! So why not check it out? I'll keep you updated! Thanks, Flcelloguy | A note? | Desk 01:20, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC)

P.S. Feel free to pass this news on to other Wikipedians.

Indus

I see you have taken an interest in the layout of the article on the Indus constellation. I am trying to devise a suitable common layout for use on all 88 constellations. See my user page for the layout that I would like to follow for all the constellations. A common layout is necessary because some constellations have been seriously neglected on Wikipedia, particularly those of the southern sky. I disagree with some of the editing you've done, particularly your placement of the astro-stub. I placed the stub at the end of the first section because I found that it tends to get lost if it's near the bottom of the page. Because it's largely a matter of taste where the text goes, I would like to hear your ideas on a common layout. If we work together, we can make the constellation articles better. --  B.d.mills  (T, C) 04:18, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)
