Hello, everyone. My name is Paul Klenk, and I live in New York City.
Wow! This place is addictive! Already I've starting contributing on the most bizarre collection of pages, including Goodnight Moon, Judith Martin, Free Republic, Ricky Jay and busking.
I've started my Wikipedia experience by participating in the editing and discussion of the page related to genericized trademarks. I'm reachable by e-mail and would be happy to discuss this subject with you.
My interest in generic words stems from my interest in proper grammar, specifically the practice of correctly capitalizing certain words. This is a subject I wish to explore further -- to move from merely defining genericized words, but to deciding when they are properly capitalized in general use.
My favorite use of capitalized trademarked words is in the book 'Geek Love' by Katherine Dunn. She makes conspicuous use of words like Thermos and Sno-Kone to great comic effect.
I recently made use of the word 'Dictaphone' in my resume, properly capitalizing it, of course:
- "Provided full secretarial support to the CEO, including heavy Dictaphone transcription."
