Trained as a palaeontologist, working primarily on the functional morphology and phylogeny of heteromorph ammonites. Now primarily a freelance writer, specialising in aquarium fish and home computing.
Co-author of the Natural History Museum's Ammonites book, part of the Living Past series and aimed at students, amateur fossil collectors, and non-professionals with an interest in these interesting fossils. Also written an introductory textbook on cladistic methods for use with Skelton & Smith's Cladistics : A Practical Primer on CD-ROM, published by Cambridge University Press. A third book, on the use of computers in amateur astronomy, was published by Springer Verlag in 2005.
